"19th Century Germans:   Why They Left, Why They Came"

Presented by Patricia Dintrone.

Bio

19thCentury Germans to America: Why They Left, Why They Came.  This talk will examine the many factors that caused German immigrants to leave Germany and settle in the United States from the 1830s to the 1880s. We will focus especially on the interrelationship of forces that encouraged departure from Germany and those that encouraged settlement in the US. Areas that we will consider include not only economic (the most commonly cited reason for emigration/immigration) but also political and religious developments in both countries as well. Although this talk focuses on the German experience, the questions it examines are applicable to any large-scale immigration movement.
